Cause for Lament - Joel 1

September 28, 2025

This week, we explore the prophet Joel’s urgent call to the people of Judah in the face of a devastating locust plague—an event so catastrophic that it demanded generational remembrance. Joel paints a vivid picture of total destruction: crops ruined, joy extinguished, and worship interrupted. The locusts are likened to an invading army, stripping away not just physical sustenance but spiritual vitality.

The message challenges us to reflect on how we respond to crisis. Joel calls for deep lament, repentance, and a return to God. The interruption of grain and drink offerings symbolizes a broken fellowship with the Lord, and the suffering of even the animals underscores how sin impacts all creation.

Joel’s cry—“To you, O Lord, I call”—reminds us that in times of national or personal adversity, our first response should be to seek God. Are we listening to what He might be saying through our circumstances?
